The twin traditions of patriarchy and marriage are rooted in maintaining women as vessels of property, little more than property themselves. This is what teachings like these boil down to, remarkably similar to traditional western marriage in that regard. For example, the tradition of women taking their husband’s name is historically representative of property transferring from one family to another (the father “gives away” the bride). This is also how it is justified that sultans and the like are entitled to many wives: they are richer. Therefore, they can own more human chattel.

It’s disgusting and barbaric, to be sure.

Heck, I’m willing to bet that in countries where women are kept covered up, there’s a higher percentage of rapes due to the mindset of men that women are just objects.

The more countries realize that treating women as second-class citizens is looked down upon with disdain by everyone else, the closer we get to breaking off a little part of the religious stranglehold on the governments. Gotta start somewhere.

What is wrong is thinking that because a man can’t control his desires, the woman should change to accommodate the man. The just thing to do is recognize that you have a problem and try to better yourself, not make others to bend to your weaknesses.

Organised religion is the criminal here. It just so happens that Islam is probably the worst offender in recent times.

There’s no way to stamp out religion, but hopefully the path of reason, science and progress will continue to diminish it.

I don’t mind women playing sports if they want to. What I mind is, foreigners telling us how we should do things. You think you are better than us, and in many ways we can learn a lot from you, I admit. However, we don’t want our countries to be copies of your own. We want to preserve our religious values and culture and morals while at the same time getting rid of the obstacles of progress. The problem is, finding the right balance. However, I don’t think we have to walk your walk and talk your talk.

Of course you do not have to walk our walk or talk our talk. Preserving culture and celebrating our differences is very necessary. But not allowing women to be who she is created to be is oppression
