The modern day 'Keep 'em Barefoot and Pregnant!'

O.K. Step one is done!

Obama-Rama said they are going to bail on Iraq!

Good move there slick!

Now, when is the U.S. , Canada and the rest of N.A.T.O. going to smarten up about Afghanistan!

I just might make this my “raison d’etre” (reason to be) folks!

The British Empire couldn’t tame these wild men of the mountains!

Nor could the Russians, or anybody else, and yet here we are right in the thick of things when we should be building a wall around the place and letting the locals sort things out themselves.

I hear all sorts of reasons why we “civilized” people are in Afghanistan, including the fight against Al Queda, terrorism in general, the heroin trade, oppression of their women and minorities, modernization of the country and on and on!

Well guess what kids?

It ain’t gonna happen!

Those dark-ages tribes in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan don’t wanna know about no modern world, or equal rights for women, or civilization or anything else for that matter!

These hillbilly’s are perfectly happy just the way they are and nothin’ is gonna change that!

Period!

Remember that law they just passed about their bitches...... sorry, I meant women!

Well check this out!

Mohammad Asif Mohseni, a top Afghan cleric who was one of the law’s main drafters, said the legislation cannot be revoked or changed because it was enacted through a legislative process - passed by both houses of parliament and signed by Karzai.

He condemned the outcry, saying western countries were trying to thwart democracy when results did not please them.

“The westerners claim that they have brought democracy to Afghanistan. What does democracy mean? It means government by the people for the people. They should let the people use these democratic rights,” Mohseni told reporters in the capital, Kabul.

Surrounded by supporters, Mohseni unfurled reams of paper with hundreds of women’s signatures and thumbprints backing the law.

(This is all bullshit because first of all, women can’t vote, and second, they were probably beaten if they didn’t sign it! -ED>)

The legislation came out of three years of debate and revision involving both Islamic scholars and members of parliament, Mohseni said.

Afghanistan is an Islamic state and its constitution defers to the Qur’an as the ultimate authority. Mohseni said the law simply reiterates rules from Islam’s holy book.

“In Shariah law, it states that a woman cannot go out without the permission of her husband,” he said. He argued that the law is permissive because it allows a woman to go out for a medical emergency or other urgent reason without asking beforehand. In addition, a couple can agree to opt out of this rule when signing a marriage contract, he said.

Mohseni said much of the uproar has come from people misinterpreting the law. He said a woman can refuse sex with her husband for many reasons beyond illness. For example, he said, a woman may be fasting for Ramadan, preparing for a pilgrimage, menstruating, or just given birth.
O.K. That part about the women putting their X or thumbprint on the petition proves that they are being downtrodden because they are not allowed to go to school or do anything else for that matter but unless we are willing to go and put a soldier in each house in Afghanistan to assure that the females are treated equally........ it just won’t happen kids!

Trust me!

A good western perspective on the controversial law.

It might not be what Islamic Sharia promulgate but certain clerics like Mohseni and others are very fond of getting personal fame through such acts. However, their voices appear stronger since they are all men of jungles and mountains

The twin traditions of patriarchy and marriage are rooted in maintaining women as vessels of property, little more than property themselves. This is what teachings like these boil down to, remarkably similar to traditional western marriage in that regard. For example, the tradition of women taking their husband's name is historically representative of property transferring from one family to another (the father "gives away" the bride). This is also how it is justified that sultans and the like are entitled to many wives: they are richer. Therefore, they can own more human chattel.

It's disgusting and barbaric, to be sure.

Heck, I'm willing to bet that in countries where women are kept covered up, there's a higher percentage of rapes due to the mindset of men that women are just objects.

The more countries realize that treating women as second-class citizens is looked down upon with disdain by everyone else, the closer we get to breaking off a little part of the religious stranglehold on the governments. Gotta start somewhere.

What is wrong is thinking that because a man can't control his desires, the woman should change to accommodate the man. The just thing to do is recognize that you have a problem and try to better yourself, not make others to bend to your weaknesses.

"He said women were "weapons" used by "Satan" to control men."

lol kind of true when you think of it. :D

But why cover them up? If they're going to control me they might as well look sexy doing it.

We can only hope that rationality and common decency prevail over hatred and xenophobia in both of these right wing agendas that threaten the free world...

Organised religion is the criminal here. It just so happens that Islam is probably the worst offender in recent times.

There's no way to stamp out religion, but hopefully the path of reason, science and progress will continue to diminish it.

I don't mind women playing sports if they want to. What I mind is, foreigners telling us how we should do things. You think you are better than us, and in many ways we can learn a lot from you, I admit. However, we don't want our countries to be copies of your own. We want to preserve our religious values and culture and morals while at the same time getting rid of the obstacles of progress. The problem is, finding the right balance. However, I don't think we have to walk your walk and talk your talk.

Of course you do not have to walk our walk or talk our talk. Preserving culture and celebrating our differences is very necessary. But not allowing women to be who she is created to be is oppression
