Today is groundhog day and for those of you in Europe or parts elsewhere I should explain that Groundhog Day is an annual holiday celebrated on February 2 in the United States and Canada.
If a groundhog emerges from its burrow today and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end.
If on the other hand, it is sunny and the groundhog sees its shadow, the groundhog will supposedly retreat into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks.
Here in Canada we have a little critter called Wiarton Willie who lives about a 50 miles north of here in Wiarton Ontario, and in the States they have Punxsutawney Phil, who lives about 50 miles south of here in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
Now as you may or may not know, this winter has been a bad one in the North East as far as cold and snow are concerned.
Everyone has had their fill of winter and wishes this global warming thing would hurry up a bit so it was with great disappointment today when Wiarton Willie emerged from his burrow, saw his shadow and predicted six more weeks of winter.
One of the bystanders immediately hit Willie over the head with a shovel!
